Gettysburg Jaycees 3rd Annual
4 Person Scramble Golf Tournament

On your mark, get set, GO!!!!!
Shown here are Matt Teeter of the Jaycees
and Lisa Conklin, Director of Development for the SPCA.

Once again the Gettysburg Jaycees did a wonderful job organizing their annual fundraiser golf tournament for the Adams County SPCA. 100 golfers came out to the beautiful Mountain View Golf Course in Fairfield to "putt" their stuff. Each year the event gets larger and more successful. This year proceeds benefiting the SPCA were $4,000. Thank you Gettysburg Jaycees!

North Hanover Mall Adoption Days

Many people stopped in to learn about the Adams County SPCA and of course to see our adoptable animals. Part of Hanover is in Adams County and we wanted to let the people of Hanover know that we have wonderful animals available for adoption. Special thanks goes to Heather Ernst, Marketing Director of the Hanover Mall for her hard work organizing this event for us. Murphy the dog was adopted because of this event! Belco Credit Union is doing a pet photo contest and has raised over $300 for the Adams County SPCA. We raised $310 in donations and raffle ticket sales.

Volunteers John and Joy Garwood were a vital help. When the event was over they took down the kennels and transported them back to the shelter. Thanks to the Girl Scouts who helped us at this event. Also, thanks to Mickey for transporting and setting up the dog kennels before the event!!

Hoping to find a new home... Murphy (on the right) was adopted

2008 Horse Sense Clinic

June 7, 2008 the SPCA held a Horse Sense Clinic at the Stremmel's Farm in Biglerville, PA. Several professional horse men and women were there with demonstrations of their skills. Although it was a very hot day, Joan and Ken Stremmel's beautiful facility offered shade in the barn where several demonstrations were held.

The SPCA horses available for adoption were all on hand at the clinic. The horses were all transported by Andy and Lori Snyder of A&L Horse Transport in New Oxford to the Stremmel's farm where they received baths and were housed in stalls with fans. They were quite pampered. The SPCA would like to thank all of the demonstrators (Scott Purdum, Emily Barker, Chad Cash, Donna Young, Phil Bower, & Ernie Kilby) and the attendees who participated in this fundraiser.

The 2nd Annual Open House w/
Yard Sale and Chicken Barbeque raises over $2,000

What a great turnout! Despite worrying about rain, it turned out to be a beautiful day. We had a steady crowd all day and all of the chicken from Pete's Perfect Poultry and the baked goods sold out! Everything was absolutely delicious. "Jericho" even stopped by for a visit, he looks great and by the way, he is now available for adoption. The animals say "Thank you" to all who stopped by to visit them. The Adams County SPCA wishes to thank all who participated, our volunteers and of course our special thanks to our Sponsor - Members 1st Credit Union.

The 17th Annual Adams County SPCA "Loyalty Walk" held on April 19, 2008 was the most successful to date with funds raised in excess of $20,000! Dogs of all colors, shapes, and sizes and their companions walked on a very beautiful sunny Saturday morning to participate in the Adams County SPCA "Loyalty Walk". There were 154 pre-registered walkers and 38 walk up registrations the day of the event. Walkers and their dogs arrived at 8:30 am for the opening ceremony highlighted by the appearance of "Jericho"; a SPCA rescued German Shepherd, who had come back from imminent death. Saturday's walk was led by "Jericho" who could not walk the complete walk but was very happy to lead all of his new friends to the first bend in the road. It was a spectacular sight with awesome results for abandoned animals of Adams County and their caretakers.

For the third year in a row Hannah Meeson won for raising the most money, and for having the most sponsors. Hannah graciously gave her prize for the most sponsors to the second runner up Jim and Sharon Garlach. Hannah said "I would like to issue a formal challenge for someone to please beat me next year". Scott and Sam Newhouse won for having the largest dog, "Matlox". Sandy Watson won with "Winston" as the smallest dog. Anna Stoner with dog "Sophie" won as the best dressed. Rebecca Makdad and her dog "Emme" won as the owner and dog who look most alike. The prize for best tail wagger went to "Necko", Gina Lawver's dog. Prize for the person and dog who traveled the farthest went to Donna Watkins with "Jake and Willow" from Charleston, South Carolina!! The Adams County SPCA wishes to thank all who participated, our volunteers and of course our lead sponsor, Adam County National Bank and the multitude of Tee-Shirt sponsors from various local businesses.

Boyd's Bear Country "Pups and Pals" Adoption Days

On August 4th & 5th Boyd's Bear Country hosted a fundraiser for the Adams County SPCA kicking off their Grand Opening of "Pups and Pals" Adoption Center. The staff and animals moved to Boyd's Bears for the Big Event. We received many donations from our "Wish List" soo many they barely fit in the back of our truck. We received monetary donations as well as money from the tip jars located in the restaurant at Boyd's Bears. There were also proceeds from the "Pups and Pals" Adoption Center given to the SPCA. Boyd's Bears provided lunch and bears for our staff. All those who donated received a stuffed thank you kitty, compliments of Boyd's Bears. In total the event raised $1,100 as well as the adoption of five dogs and one cat!! We would like to say thanks to Tractor Supply Company (TSC) of Hanover for lending us the dog kennels we needed to make this event happen. Another thank you to Andy and Lori Snyder of A&L Horse Transport for providing the muscle and transportation to move everything on site. Please check out Andy and Lori under "Volunteering" on our website. Special thanks to Boyd's Bears for a wonderful experience.

Featured at the event was "Chester's Choice" a wine bottled exclusively for the Adams County SPCA in honor of Chester the house mouse. The afternoon drink of the day was "Chester's Raspberry Chiller", see recipe below. Entertainment was provided by "Nightlite" a 70's, 80's & 90's dance band. Total money raised was $650.00 providing the much needed funds to care for the animals at the shelter. Adams County SPCA's Adoption Weekend at Gettysburg Village Factory Outlets

Twenty-eight families made adoption their first option during "Adams County SPCA's Adoption Weekend" at Gettysburg Village Factory Outlets June 29, 30 and July 1. Sixteen kittens, nine dogs, two cats and one horse found new families during this three-day event.

Children enjoyed a variety of games, helium balloons, clowns, "The Jester Man Show", and other activities around the gazebo on Saturday. Adults played the Number Game when visiting adoptable animals in suite # 430. Upon winning they were able to choose a basket filled with "goodies" that were donated items. Available for purchase included: tee shirts, dog and cat toys, chews and all kinds of treats.

There was also a "Cutest Pet Contest" with 25 of our adoptable animals. The winner was #6 "Angel" !!!! Congratulations to Angel! She has since been adopted to a wonderful family! Thank you to everyone that voted!!!

ANGEL

Several of our dogs strolled up and down Main Street wearing "Adopt Me" vests with clear vinyl pockets suggesting donations be made. The crowd responded positively with over $300 being placed in the vest's pockets to help care for our animals. Also visiting shoppers on Main St. were Larry LongEars (shelter mascot), and the black and white dog belonging to "Big Dog" Outlet Store. Kati Carroll (Secretary of the Board) brought her miniature horse, Jazz, to share with Outlet shoppers.

American Humane Association's Red Star Disaster Rig made Gettysburg its first stop on a nation-wide tour promoting animal welfare and shelters across the USA. The "Big Rig", as it is known, is a two-story tractor trailer that can house 15 volunteers, 10 days of food, several boats, all terrain vehicles, a work shop, a surgery room and a huge command control center. Shortly after leaving Gettysburg, the emergency rig was called to Oklahoma to help animals in flood waters there. Thank you for all you do, American Humane.

Adams County's SPCA is most appreciative to Gettysburg Village's Linda Gebhart, the Outlet maintenance crew, our volunteers, shelter technicians, shelter Manager, shelter Director, and Board members for all your hard work. The SPCA is located at 11 Goldenville Road, Gettysburg, PA. The phone number is 717-334-8876. Hours of operation are daily except Tuesday. Don't forget to visit our website at www.adamscountyspca.org when looking for a pet. Click on Events to find out where else you can visit with our animals. You'll be glad you did.
