Benefits of Adopting a Cat or Kitten

Unconditional love and the joy of having lifelong companionship are two of the benefits of owning a cat. Through adoption, you can give a cat a second chance for a happy life plus, give yourself many hours filled with fun and affection. Below are some helpful hints for a happy cat:
  •

Allow your cat to sleep or just sit and soak in the sunshine. Indoor cats love to feel the warmth of the sun and will sleep peaceably for hours near a window.

  •

Stroking your cat has healthful benefits for you and your cat. Cats enjoy physical contact with you and it helps lower your blood pressure as well.

  •

Make a special time for you and your cat to play. Cats are naturally playful and will enjoy playing with balls or "mice". This will help keep them out of household items.

  •

Just like humans, cats need to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. Keep water fresh near your cat's food dish.

  •

Take your cat to your veterinarian annually in order to keep up with vaccines and as a preventative measure.

 Guardian Angel

Why hello there! My name is Lucky and I am an absolutely adorable (or so my foster Mom says) male brown tabby kitten that is about 3 months old. I was brought to the Adams County SPCA awhile back with three other kittens. After being in back for awhile my brothers, Frankie, Spanky and I all went to live with our foster Momma. Frankie and Spanky are bigger than me and they were healthy enough to move back to the adoption room within a very short time. I was much smaller and weaker and was nothing but a bag of bones. My foster Momma did everything to get me to eat and for awhile there she was real worried that I might not make it. She said that I really lived up to my name of Lucky because I came back from the brink! I am now a healthy, happy and feisty little guy that loves life! I have been hanging out with a foster sister Myra and we love to play and wrestle and snuggle together. Today our foster Momma said that it was finally time to find our very own forever homes and she brought us up to Pet Valu. We are sharing a big pen with our new sister Taffy. I sure hope that someone comes to adopt me soon because I really miss being in a home.

Hey there everybody! My name is Leo and I am an adorable black and white male kitten that is about 13 weeks old. My brother and I were brought in to the Adams County SPCA as strays from Mt. Pleasant Township. We were just recently "promoted" to the cat adoption room and put into a cage together. Let me tell you - WE WANT OUT OF HERE NOW!! It is awfully hard to be a kitten and have to be cooped up instead of running around playing. Yesterday I was hanging upside down on the cage door crying, trying to get someone's attention. Maybe it worked because today we are getting moved to a bigger cage and I can't wait! What I really want though is something that I never really had - a home to call my very own.

ATTENTION SOLDIERS! This is the Lieutenant speaking! I am a cute little male grey tabby and white kitten that is about 13 weeks old. I came here to the SPCA with my brother Leo after someone found us wandering outside in Mt. Pleasant Twp. Leo and I have lots of energy and we love to play, play and play some more! When you have this much competition with so many cats and kittens all trying to get a home - you really have to try to stand out from the crowd. I do that by crying and looking pitifully adorable! I sure hope that it works real soon, so that I won't have to be in a cage much longer.

Well howdy do! My name is Cyrus and I am a handsome dark gray male kitten that is about 12 weeks old. My two sisters and I were found running around outside on the grounds at the Adams County SPCA. It would appear that someone abandoned us here without bothering to take us inside the building. I am sure glad that we were noticed quickly and that we are all still together. In fact, when the girls saw us, instead of running the other direction we ran right to them, we were that hungry. We just got moved up to the cat adoption room and we see that there are a lot of other cats and kittens in here. If only people would be more responsible, there would not be so many unwanted animals in this world! I am too young to be starting out life in a cage. I dream of being snuggled and kissed and adored by a new Mommy and Daddy who would never think of abandoning me!

Hello there everyone! My name is Cotton and I am a cute little female kitten that is about 12 weeks old and a smoky grey in color. My brother and sister and I were discovered running around outside of the Adams County SPCA. It is pretty obvious that someone must have dumped us there like so much garbage. It really hurts to think that we were not wanted. We still miss our Momma and wonder what ever happened to her. It is a big scary world outside and we were sure glad that someone found us and brought us inside where we could be safe and have full tummies. We just recently were moved up to the cat adoption room and are all in a cage together. I love my siblings but it sure is crowded in this cage. A girl does need some alone time now and then! I just hope that someone will fall in love with us soon and take us home with them!

Alright - I am trying to pose as best as I can! Don't you think that this colorful ball really brings out my beauty? My name is Cynthia and I am an adorable female smokey grey kitten that is 12 weeks old. You may have been reading the stories from my brother, Cyrus and sister, Cotton about being abandoned outside of the SPCA. You would think that somebody could have at least had the decency to bring us inside. We were definitely too little and too young to have wound up here all by ourselves. Luckily we were discovered and brought to safety inside with a full bowl of kitten chow for our hungry bellies. Now that we are big enough we have been moved up to the cat adoption room. Unfortunately it is so crowded in here that the three of us are still sharing one cage. Yesterday we got to run around the adoption room for the first time and it was a ball! It was so great to stretch our legs, climb the cat trees and to play with all of the cool toys! I just want to be able to have that freedom all of the time - not just for a few minutes. Won't you come in here today and adopt your very own furbaby?

Well hello there! My name is Winona and I am a beautiful female tortie kitten that is about three months old. I was brought here to the Adams County SPCA as a stray from Mt. Pleasant Township. After sitting in the back for awhile I was promoted to the cat adoption room and have been put into a pen with three boys. Yuck! I guess that they are okay though since one of them, Tootsie, was giving me a bath yesterday. I have to admit that it felt pretty darn good to have someone showing me affection - even if it was a boy! The four of us also got to stretch our legs for a few minutes out of the cage when a volunteer came in to the adoption room. That was the most fun ever because we actually got to act like kittens should - running and playing and wrestling with each other! I sure hope that I don't have to stay in here much longer. I just want what we all do - my very own forever home.

Oops! I think that she can still see me in here! I am trying my best to hide from that lady photographer, but she went and snapped my picture anyway. My name is Foxie and I am a beautiful female tortoiseshell cat that is about two years old. I was found wandering as a stray in the Gettysburg area before being brought to the Adams County SPCA. I had a baby boy with me when I was found. It is hard enough being on your own with no means of support, but even harder when you are trying to raise a family. I had to really work hard to find food and shelter enough for the both of us and to protect him from all of the bad things in the world. I am still trying to adjust to life in an animal shelter. It is pretty scary in here with all of the strange sounds and so many other cats and kittens all around me. I really wasn't in the mood for a photo session so I wasn't being very cooperative! I just want some love and affection and most of all - a real home!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Life just isn't fair. My former owners end up breaking up and I end up in a cage. Let me start from the beginning. My name is Midnight and I am a very large and handsome fella that has long gorgeous hair. I am 3 years old and am already neutered and declawed. My parents decided that they couldn't live together anymore and instead of one of them taking me with them - they left me with their Mom. Well that wasn't a very good solution, since she couldn't take care of me. As a result I wound up here at the Adam County SPCA. Now I am not usually one to complain, but being in a cage is definitely not my style. I prefer a lap or maybe a nice cushy sofa watching Animal Planet. I am a very friendly guy and just want a real family again. One that won't give me up for any reason!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Well, hello there everyone! I guess I am supposed to tell you a little bit about myself - so here goes. Like so many cats around here I came to the Adams County SPCA as a stray. They said that I was found in Franklin Township, but I just know that at one time I obviously had a family and now I don't. My new name is Johnny and I am a young neutered male cat that has a short smoky grey coat with a tiny white patch on my chest. I am also already declawed. Since coming here I am pretty confused and depressed and spend most of my day sleeping. After all - what else is a big guy supposed to do in a little cage? I have heard that times are pretty rough around here for all of the animals - but especially for us cats. There are just so many of us coming through the doors and so few cats being adopted. I am really a nice boy, but I just want to feel secure and loved again - this time forever.

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there guys! My name is Rocky and I am a big one year old neutered male cat. I am all black except for a white patch on my chest and I am what they call a polydactyl cat - I have extra big looking feet from my extra toes. Even though I was brought in as a stray from Hamiltonban Township - it is pretty obvious that someone did love me once. I am a very sweet guy and I adore being petted, hugged and brushed. I had two different lady volunteers spoiling me yesterday at the same time and I absolutely loved the attention! I would make a wonderful addition to anyone's family if they would just give me a chance. Won't you please come in to the Adams County SPCA and ask for Rocky!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Well hello there folks. I have been told that my new name is Ruthie and that I am a female orange tabby that is about 3 years old. I was found wandering in Conewago Township before being brought to the Adams County SPCA. It sure makes me sad to think that my family didn't even come looking for me or that they might have abandoned me on purpose. I am still a young lady and deserve to have a full and happy life - just like all of the other animals in here. It is certainly not my fault that someone was not responsible enough or didn't care enough about me to make me their forever companion. I am looking for a second chance and I sure hope my special person comes walking through that door today.

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hey there everyone! My name is Majic and I am a young, neutered male brown tabby cat. I was brought in to the Adams County SPCA as a stray from the Littlestown area. I just don't understand why so many of us cats wind up as "strays" with no one to care about them. I know that I sure had a family once since I am a very friendly and loving little boy. At first I was a little scared of the new environment up in the adoption room, but I am fast coming out of my shell. My favorite part of the day is when volunteers come in to spend time with us and I get to have a few precious minutes out of my cage. Oh how wonderful it feels to stretch my legs, to climb and scratch the cat trees and especially to be loved and hugged! I have a lot of competition when it comes to getting a new home since this place is full to the brim. I just hope that someone realizes that they could put some Majic in their life if they adopt me!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there guys! My name is Cashew and I am an all black 3 month old male kitten. My sister, Cupid, and I were brought in as strays from Berwick Township. It is the same old story over and over again. Kittens and cats by the box full arriving here at the Adams County SPCA on a daily basis. When are people going to start being responsible and have their cats spayed and neutered? Don't they know that there are way too many of us being born and not nearly enough people to give us homes? My sister and I are together in a little cage way up on the top row in the cat adoption room. It is all still pretty scary for us, but I am glad that we have each other. Yesterday we got to play out of the cage for a few minutes, but I ran and hid under the cages. A nice volunteer got me out and hugged and kissed me all over. Boy did that feel good! I hope that someone will come in here real soon and take us both home with them!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hey there everybody! My name is Cupid and I am an adorable 3 month old female tortie kitten. My brother Cashew and I were brought in to the Adams County SPCA as strays from Berwick Township. I sure do miss our Mommy and wish that I knew what happened to her. We are just little guys and we sure can't survive on our own. I think that there are some people in this world that are very mean and I sure don't ever want to meet them. Yesterday I got to spend a little time out of my cage for the very first time. My silly brother was scared and ran to hide under the cages. I was scared at first (you know what a "poofy" tail looks like?), but I decided that this was pretty cool and I started to explore. I am definitely more adventuresome than Cashew and I was checking out all of the other cats, the climbing trees and toys. It was sure great to get a little freedom, but it sure didn't last long. Won't you come and make me your forever baby today?

   Be my Guardian Angel

I sure don't understand people sometimes. Don't they know that when you get a pet that it should be as a lifetime commitment and not just a passing fancy? My former "owner" apparently didn't give much thought to my adoption since I am only 4 months old and have already lost the only home that I ever knew. They surely knew that they were going away to college soon, but they still made me their pet. Now I have been surrendered to the Adams County SPCA because they left for college. My name is Jerry and I am a young female kitten that is smokey grey with white paws. I am super friendly and very playful. I am hanging out in a big pen with my new pal Pumpkin and a couple of youngsters. It is so full in here and we are all looking for new homes. I just hope that my stay here will be a short one and that I can move on to a new and better life!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hello there, my name is Sir Loin and I am an absolutely adorable 8 week old male kitten that has long hair that is grey tabby and white in color. I came in as a stray from Littlestown to the Adams County SPCA. I am such a tiny little fella that I certainly should have had a Mommy and brothers and sisters too, but it was just little ole me - all by my lonesome. How do these things keep happening to us? Just because we are cats does not mean that we can take care of ourselves or that we don't need a home with caring people. I know that this is not the way for a little kitten to have to start life. I sure hope that I will know the love of a real home and family - real soon!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Well hello there! My name is Dillian and I am an adorable 4 month old neutered male tuxedo kitten. You can tell me apart from my brother Jake because I have a white chin and he has a black spot on his chin. My two brothers and I were surrendered by our former family because they were moving and unable to take us with them. I don't really understand why my family didn't want us anymore. After all I don't take up much space and I could have slipped right into a suitcase - no problem! We got moved up to adoption yesterday and now we are playing the waiting game like everyone else. We are all waiting patiently (or at least has patiently as a kitten can!) for our new family to come walking through that door. It would be really great if I could at least get a home with one of my brothers. That way I would have an instant playmate! Won't you please come in today and make me your baby?

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hey there guys! My name is Ice Man (really folks - I have no idea how I got such a name!) and I am a sweet 4 month old neutered male kitten that is all black in color. My brothers Jake, Dillian and I were brought in to the Adams County SPCA because our people were moving and didn't want to take us with them. I am pretty disappointed that we were not considered to be a cherished part of the family. All we ever gave was unconditional love and affection and of course, endless entertainment! Now we are all sitting in a big pen in the cat adoption room looking at cage after cage that are filled with other cats and kittens that are all looking for a new home. Why can't people be more responsible? Don't they realize that our lives really do matter and that we shouldn't be considered just a passing fancy to be dumped off when our cuteness has worn off? I just want a real home - this time forever!

Hi there! My name is Beaner and I am a lovely one year old female grey tabby with white markings. I was brought in as a stray with Bambi from the Abbottstown area before coming to the Adams County SPCA. I am a very sweet and friendly young lady that is still a little scared by the things that have happened to me lately. One day you are part of someone's family and the next you are living on the streets just trying to survive. After that you are picked up by strange people and brought to a building where you live in a cage surrounded by other cages of cats. I am still trying to figure out why I am here and just hope that things will get better soon. Won't you be a part of my very own happy ending?

   Be my Guardian Angel

Uh Oh, I got caught ... I got the mouse!!! And boy did I have fun chasing it. My name is Truffles, I am a three month old neutered male black kitten and I love to play. My foster Mommy can tell you that I love to play, I will jump higher than you can imagine, do back flips, front flips whatever it takes to catch my toys. I am also a very affectionate kitty, I love to lay on you and just snooze and I have to have my blankie, cause I like to knead my biscuits and suckle the blankie ... it makes me feel secure since I lost my real Mommy at such a young age. I don't like being alone it's scary. I really hope that I can be adopted with my brother Tootsie, or into a home that already has a cat. I get along fine with dogs too, my foster home had three dogs and I wasn't scared of them at all. It's no fun being stuck in this cage after being able to run around in a home, so I am hoping to get adopted real soon!!!!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there, my name is Tootsie. I am a three month old neutered male Tuxedo and I was brought to the SPCA as a stray with my brothers and sisters. I have no idea where my Mommy is and I think about her everyday. When we came to the shelter we were all starting to get a little cold so we were sent home with some of the staff here to get better. I went to a foster home with my brother Truffles and we have really enjoyed being there. We got to romp and play and cuddle with our foster Mommy & Daddy. I loved it there. We got to see what it was like to live in a real home. We got to watch TV, we learned the everyday sounds of living in a home, when they take a shower, blow dry their hair, flush the toilet ... I know those sounds are okay and aren't going to hurt me. I am litter box trained and I purr the minute you touch me. I love my brother Truffles more than anything in this world and would love to be adopted with him, if not, that is okay too. I am just thankful to be alive and can't wait to find my forever home!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there, my name is Brazen (also known as Boo to my foster family). I am a little boy about 9 weeks old, already neutered. My foster Mommy & family wanted me to tell you that I love to play and snuggle. My favorite toy is jingle balls. I growl at the balls when I play with them but don't let that scare you. I am my foster boys favorite!!!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there, my name is Myra (aka Ellie - the name my foster Mommy gave me). I am a gray short hair female about 9 weeks old. My foster Mommy said that I am a very sweet kitten. I love to play and want to be your friend!! Remember all of my brothers and sisters need to be aopted into great, fun and loving families!!!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there, my name is Taffy. I am a 10 week old female gray tabby and I am looking for a home. You see I have never had a home, I was born out in the wild and someone brought me and my brothers and sisters to the SPCA. I don't even know what happened to my Mommy. I think about her everyday. I hope that she is alive and doing okay. When we were brought in we were very skinny and had a little cold, so some really nice girls here took some of us home and have been taking real good care of us. I was having a blast ... I now know what it is like to be a part of a family, and I loved it!!!! We had a lot of fun there, but now we are back looking for a home of our very own. If you think you'd like to meet me I am in the "Cage of Hope" at PetValu in Gettysburg. I am very cuddly and would make an excellent lap cat, please ask the girls at the SPCA about me or better yet come by PetValu and take me home!!!!!!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hi there, my name is Apple. I am a very playful 1 year old tortoiseshell female cat. I arrived at the SPCA as a very friendly stray and before I knew it - I was a Mom! Luckily I was fortunate enough to be fostered by an SPCA staff member so my kittens and I could stay healthy until we were ready to be adopted. Now that my 5 beautiful kittens are big and strong, we are all looking for good homes. Some of my favorite things to do are lay on the windowsill to catch the morning sun (although I am quite a bed hog as well!),play with catnip and to have my belly rubbed. I lounge around most of the day, but I will be right by the door to greet you when you come home from work. I even like to play with other cats when I got a few minutes away from the kittens. I will miss my babies but I hope that I will get a new family that will love me as much as I will love them!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hey there - you caught me by surprise! My name is Pumpkin and I am a cute little neutered male 8 week old kitten that is an orange tabby with white paws. You can tell me apart from my brother, Dandelion, because I have a white stripe under my left eye. You may have just read his story telling about my 4 siblings and I being born at the shelter. Our Mom and all 5 of us kittens got to go live with a wonderful foster Mom that works here at the Adams County SPCA for the next several weeks until we were old enough to be adopted. It is so crowded with cats and kittens that need homes that there are nine of us living in one big pen! I sure hope that some of us get adopted soon because I really just want to run and play like a normal kitten. Please come visit soon and take me home with you - and maybe a pal for me to play with too!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Finally I got promoted to adoption! My name is Bliss and I am a lovely 1 year female black cat that has already been here at the Adams County SPCA for over 3 long months. I was brought here as a very pregnant stray from Straban Township. After giving birth I wound up nursing not only my own babies, but numerous other motherless kittens that wound up at the shelter. I guess that they felt that I had done my duty long enough and now I am in a big pen in adoption with my baby, Corey and three other kittens. To tell you the truth - I'm getting a little grumpy from having so many kittens pestering me for so long! I just want a real home to call my very own with people that will love me unconditionally!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Well hello out there! My name is Rickie (I know it does sound more like a boy's name!) and I am an adorable 6 month old female kitten that is orange tabby and white in color. I came to the Adams County SPCA after the Humane Officer requested that my former "owners" surrender me because I was not being taken care of properly. I am a very sweet and affectionate little girl in spite of the terrible situation that I came from and am just hoping that my future will soon be looking brighter. It is so crowded in the cat adoption room so I sure hope that some kind person will notice me and make me their very own furbaby!

   Be my Guardian Angel

I guess that I am supposed to introduce myself since I am the new kid on the block. My name is Gracie and I am a lovely 7 year old female black cat that is already spayed. My former family brought me to the Adams County SPCA and "surrendered" me to the shelter. I really wish I knew why they did this to me because it is breaking my heart to know that they did not want me anymore. After seven long years of being part of a family, then in a blink of an eye - my whole life is turned upside down. I am very sad and scared right now and just hoping that things will get better soon. A very nice lady volunteer came in yesterday and held me in the rocking chair for a long time. It really felt good to be loved again! Please come here and make me your special baby girl - today.

Hello there darlings! Well this is a little embarrassing, but I have to tell you ... I have a new name, it is Sammy. It used to be Samantha, however, it has been discovered that I am not a female, but a neutered male. How will I ever live this one down!!! Oh well, here's the scoop. I am a lovely 3-4 year old classic brown tabby. I was found as a stray in McSherrystown before being brought to the Adams County SPCA. It is really discouraging to see how many of my fellow felines are in the same predicament here in the cat adoption room. Every single cage is full and some of the long timers have told me that they have been here for 2,3 and even 4 long months! I am encouraging anyone out there that has been thinking about adding a furry feline to your family - to come adopt from the Adams County SPCA. Hopefully you will pick me!

Well hello there! My name is Molly and I am a beautiful 3 year old female tuxedo cat. I was found as a stray in Gettysburg Borough and my people never even came looking for me. I have to say that this experience has left me feeling pretty sad and unwanted. After giving my love and affection to a family for all of those years - why would they not care anymore? I really miss being part of a family and having a home. I am a sweet and calm little girl that enjoys being held and snuggled. I sure hope that someone will walk through the door to the cat adoption room and fall in love with me - today!

Hi there folks! My name is Tangelo and I am a one year old orange tabby male that is having a bad spell in my life. First I found myself out on the streets as a stray, then I got hit by a car and brought to the Adams County SPCA ... then I had to have my tail amputated because it was so damaged in the accident! The wonderful vets and staff at the Gettysburg Animal Hospital fixed me up and now I am up for adoption - minus my tail! I am healing just fine and feeling better every day. Right now I have to wear one of those funny collars to keep me from bothering my stump, so it is even more cramped in my little cage. I sure hope that I can find my very own home soon and start my life over. I want to be safe and loved - this time forever!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Hey there everybody! My name is Glance and I am a loveable little male 4 month old grey and white tabby kitten and already neutered. I came to the Adams County SPCA along with my sister Splash after being found as strays in Tyrone Township. How we came to be out there all alone is Anyone's guess, but all I know is that it was really scary out there. We were just little guys and we didn't have a Mommy to feed us and keep us safe from all of the bad things in the world. We feel very safe and loved here at the shelter, but being in a cage is no place for fun loving little kittens! We want to run and play and explore and we can only do that for a few minutes a day or inside the pen that is our temporary home. Please consider adding a little furbaby to your family today!

Hi there folks! My name is Romeo and I am a 1 year old male brown tabby and white cat that has recently been neutered. I was found as a stray in Highland Township before being brought to the shelter. I don't know how I came to be wandering around all by myself, since I was obviously part of a family once. I don't know anything about living out in the wild - I'm definitely used to the good life. What I do know is that being in a little cage is not much fun when you are a young and active guy. I would much rather be running and playing with toys all day or being snuggled by a pair of loving arms. I am definitely trying to live up to my new name! I am a real lover boy and just want a new home to share my love with!

   Be my Guardian Angel

Well howdy partners! My name is Stringbean and I am a 4 year old neutered male cat that is grey tabby and white in color. You may wonder why I came to have such a strange name, since I am definitely not a skinny little kid. Apparently my former "owners" did not take very good care of me or my siblings, since we were essentially living off of canned vegetables. After our "owners" were evicted - the nice Humane Officer came and rescued us from a very bad situation. I am just so thankful to have a warm bed, good chow and friendly people that take such good care of me now.
